WILDERNESS
TREKKING is for the hardy who like to get away
from civilization by foot or flight. We explore and discover the
wilderness and its wildlife by hiking its trails, combing its
beaches and climbing its mountains. Every day will bring a new
adventure: Beach Combing and Brown Bears of the western shores of
Alaska Range; Tundra Caribou, Moose and Wolves of the Denali;
Dall Sheep, Goats and Black Bears and Grizzlies of the Chugach
National Forest; Orcas, Sea Otters, Whales of the Kenai Fjord
National Park. Trips are suited to your wilderness experience and
physical condition.
DAY TREKS:Our wilderness treks begin with several day-long exploration climbing hikes on one of Alaskas many historical trails. We use the following criteria to determine our daily trips: 1) guests' physical abilities 2) guests' interest 3) seasonal condition of trail 4) time and distance. Day hikes may vary from well-maintained level trails to steep rocky ascents. Day hikes may take us along the coastal shore or up through the mountain passes or onto the mountain peaks. Therefore they can also vary in distance from a few miles to fifteen miles. The key to remember about day hikes is that you will get "home" tonight. That means delicious meals, hot showers and comfortable bed. During the first days we stay in our home in Anchorage or our log cabins in the Chugach Forest. You will hike the remote areas. Very few people will be sharing your mountain, your valley or your experience.
CROSS COUNTRY BACKPACKING &
ECOTOURING: Our log cabin facilities are located
only a few miles from the trail head of the famous Resurrection
Trail. This historic trail is maintained by the Chugach National
Forest. Beginning in Seward, the ice free port of the gulf coast,
it penetrates through the Chuagch mountain range to emerge on the
northern side and the gateway to early gold fields of Turnagain
Arm. We have hiked all of the main trails of South-Central,
including the now famous Ididarod (it took a sled-dog race to
make it world famous). We also know the off trails where you are
more likely to find wild game (bear, moose, caribou, sheep). A
three day trek is a part of every five or seven day package.
Longer treks are available.
SPECIAL
USE CAMPS: We maintain several remote tenting camp
sites. In the picture to the left a herd of migrating caribou
pass between guests and our tent camp seen in the background. At
our mountain camp you can take spectacular mountain hikes above
the glaciers of the Alaska Range. The Cook Inlet camp was
established to take advantage of bear watching opportunities.
Coastal Brown Bears are attracted to the tidal waters in early
June. Our beach camp is located in the heart of brown bear
habitat. Vigilance is practiced daily.
Personal Alaskan Adventures Trekking Defined:
Trekking is a very broad term used by outdoor enthusiast. Alaska trekking is an even broader term because of the extreme diversities of our state wilderness. I trust that the following explanation will provide you with a better understanding of our approach to trekking in Alaska. Our greatest desire is to see your expectations exceeded.
All trekking adventures must have a primary a goal. Our goal is to provide you with the opportunity to experience as much of Alaska as possible in the limited time you are with us. We begin with early conversations about your previous outdoor experiences and your Alaskan expectations. We build upon each day's experience, extending ourselves physically and preparing for even great adventure. Trekking Alaska is hiking, climbing, canoeing, camping and exploring the outback wilderness and wildlife. Trekking is moving away from the roads and main transportation corridors. Trekking requires that you plan your abilities, time and resources in order to sustain yourself away from the everyday conveniences.
Equipment:
Overnight tenting is for the hardy who can carry 25# to 45# equipment on their back for several days. We provide all the essential camping equipment. A personal equipment and clothing list are always forwarded to our clients in advance. Many suggestions will be offered to help you choose the best clothing for your particular trip. Backpacks can also be provided but most clients have their own custom pack and sleeping gear. We can provide packers for seniors who love to walk but need assistance with their heavier gear. This information needs to be forwarded to us early. Costs may be adjusted if additional backpackers are required.
Experience:
It would be hard to name all the places we have trekked in Alaska: the shores of Prince William Sound; the mountains of the Alaska Range; the interior of Denali; rivers above the Arctic Circle; around and over Kodiak Island. We know where the animals are during any season and how to find them. We should note that we do not provide services for the extreme, carefree or careless: i.e., rock climbing, sky-diving. We occasionally will rope up while crossing a glacial ice field for safety purposes. We have never had an accidents because we stress your safety first.
